WAYNE COUNTY OHIO ************************************************************************** File Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Ann Marr Sept 11, 2003 *************************************************************************** Whether they were Hammans, Holmans, Hermans, Harmons, or Howmans, they were in Wayne County 200 years ago by Ann Marr, Many of the Howman neighbors in Wayne County were from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. This family's ancestry is still a mystery, but two Howman brothers in Wayne County, Ohio were born in that state. Someday, someone will undoubtedly find the clue that leads to their father's name. Spelling was creative among the descendants of Frederick and Jacob Howman – if you are researching them, try every derivative you can think of. The first brother, Frederick Howman, was born 1788 in Pennsylvania and died September 20, 1837 in Wayne Co, Ohio. He was 49 years old when he died and burial was in the Dutch Reformed Cemetery in Congress Twp, Wayne County, Ohio. Frederick married Elizabeth Rishel about 1812 in Pennsylvania; born May 19, 1796 in Pennsylvania; died July 6, 1852 in Wayne County, Ohio. Frederick Howman obtained two U.S. Patent Grants of Wayne County Lands: May 1, 1815 Hamman, Fred SW Sec 33 160 Acres March 8, 1819 Hamman, Fred Twp Congress T-R 21-14 Sec 33 SW 160 Acres Recorded 36 231-30 Frederick and Elizabeth had seven daughters and four sons. This family stayed close to home: unless otherwise noted, all births, marriages and deaths occurred in Wayne County. Hannah Howman was born in Maryland 11 Jan 1813. She died 19 Jul 1891 in Orange Twp, Ashland County, Ohio at 78 years of age. Her body rests in St. Luke's Cemetery. She married Solomon Markel 13 Jan 1835. Solomon was born in Westmoreland Co, PA 11 Dec 1812 to Jacob Markel and Margaret Trostel. He died 28 Sep 1883 in Ashland County age 70. Catherine Howman was born in 1816 and died around 1890. She married Jacob Shugars in Feb 1836. Jacob was born in PA in 1814. Elizabeth Howman was born in 1819 and died around 1900. She married Henry Shugars 18 Sep 1838. He was born about 1818 and resided in Paulding County, Ohio in 1851. Nancy Howman was born in Ohio 13 Jun 1821. She died 27 Apr 1887, 65 years of age. She married John Myers (Moyers) 27 Oct 1840. John was born 8 Jun 1818. John died 6 May 1861, aged 42 years. Both are interred in the Old Dutch Reformed Cemetery in Congress Twp. William Howman was born in Ohio 5 Oct 1823. William died 2 Jan 1892 at 68 years of age. He married Louisa Young 19 Jan 1843. Louisa was born in PA 11 Jul 1824 and died 12 Mar 1853 at 28 years of age. William secondly married Mary Eicher 3 Jan 1854. Mary was born in PA 20 Feb 1832 and died 21 Oct 1908 at 76 years of age. William and both of his wives are buried in Congress Cemetery in Congress Twp. Mary Howman was born in 1824. Mary died 1849-1850 in DeKalb County, Indiana at 25 years of age. She married John McClellan 5 Dec 1844. John was born 10 Aug 1817, the son of James McClellan and Elizabeth Sue Knapp. After Mary died, he wed Matilda Adams in DeKalb County 17 Feb 1852 and Ellen Armstrong in the same place on 3 Jul 1879. John died 18 Jun 1897 in Auburn, DeKalb County at 79 years of age. His body was interred in Auburn's Evergreen Cemetery. Peter Howman was born 23 Oct 1825 and died 15 Jun 1897 at 71 years of age. He married Catherine Holmes 25 Aug 1846. Catherine was born 19 Jan 1828. Catherine died 27 May 1896 aged 68 years. Both were interred in Congress Cemetery. Peter was a very successful farmer, owning as much as 300 acres around 1880. His farm is owned by a cattle farmer today and is located less than 1/2 mile south of Wayne County Road 161 on the west side of State 539. It is said that Peter gave each of his eight children $1,000 upon marriage to help them get a start. Fanny Howman was born in Congress Twp, Wayne County 12 Jul 1829. She died 15 Jun 1903 at 73 years of age. She married William Rice 27 Aug 1845. William was born 24 Apr 1824, it is not known where, but he was the son of John Rice and Margaret "Peggy" Wible. He died 7 Nov 1908 at 84 years of age. Congress Cemetery was the burial place for the couple. Margaret Howman was born 1 Jan 1832. Margaret died Mar 1928 in Sumner, Lawrence County, Illinois, at 96 years of age. She married Jacob Strouse 3 Apr 1851. Jacob was born 29 Nov 1829, the son of Joseph Strouse and Susannah Markel. Jacob died Dec 1896 in Sumner at 67 years of age. John Howman was born 9 Sep 1833. John died 1 Mar 1876 age 42. His body was interred in Congress Cemetery. He married Charity Ann Strouse 26 Aug 1852. She was born in Congress Twp in 1835, the daughter of George Strouse. In Sept 1854 Isaac Gordon & Rachel his wife sold to John 40 acres in Jackson Twp, Ashland County, Ohio. Witnesses to the sale were Joseph Bolls and Jacob Strouse. Henry Howman was born in Congress Twp 20 Apr 1835. Henry died 20 Mar 1915 in the same place at age 79 years. He married twice: (1) Mary Ann Ewing 29 Nov 1855. Mary was born 10 Feb 1838 to Samuel and Eliza Ewing. Mary died 28 Oct 1859 at 21 years of age. (2) Sarah McVicker 24 Jul 1864. Sarah was born 6 Jun 1840 and died 31 Dec 1920 at 80 years of age. Henry and both wives are interred in Congress Cemetery The other brother, Jacob Howman was born April 24, 1786 in Pennsylvania, and died December 11, 1861 in Chester Twp, Wayne County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth before 1821. She was born October 3, 1788 in Pennsylvania, and died July 30, 1850 in Congress Twp. Their remains lie in the Dutch Reformed Cemetery. Again, unless otherwise noted, vital events occurred in Wayne County. Frederick and Jacob owned property on the same road in Congress Twp. The Dutch Reformed Cemetery, where many of the family are buried, is within a mile of the home properties. Both Jacob & Frederick purchased land in 1819. They might have been in Stark County prior to that as the 1820 census shows a Jacob & Frederick Hommon in either Paris or Perry Twp. Children of Jacob Howman and Elizabeth are: Madeline Howman, born about 1810 in Pennsylvania. She married Nicholas Stonehill March 17, 1831. He was born December 7, 1813; died March 5, 1843 in Chester Twp and is buried at Rumbaugh Cemetery, Chester Twp. Their children were all born in Wayne County. Nancy b: 1831 Catherine b: 1834 or 1835 Elizabeth b: 1836 or 1837 Sarah b: 1838 or 1839 Magdalena b: 1840 or 1841 Phillip Howman, born 1814 (elsewhere?); died March 21, 1847 in Baughman Twp, Wayne County. He married Elizabeth about 1840; born 1812 in Pennsylvania; died November 6, 1889 in Baughman Twp. His will dated May 23, 1847, was filed in Wayne County. Executor was Jonathan Pontius, witnesses Andr. Ault and Jac. Holm. Burial of the couple was in St. Michael's Cemetery, Baughman Twp. His two children were: Daniel b. 28 Oct 1841 in Ohio, married Mary E. Jewelry 8 Sep 1866 Andrew Jackson b. 1846 George Howman, born about 1815 in Ohio; died before 1883. Where he died is unknown. He married (1) Maria; and (2) Mary Hare March 29, 1838; born 1818 in Pennsylvania. George's children (all born in Wayne County) were mothered by Mary Hare: Sarah b: 1837/1838 Mary b: 1839/1840 Lovinia b: 1840/1841 Elizabeth b: 1842/1843 Louisa b: 1847/1848 William b: Jun 1850 William died 21 Apr 1851 at less than one year of age. He is buried in the Old Dutch Reformed Cemetery. Mary Howman, born about 1819 in Ohio. She married Jacob Gier July 20, 1840; born September 23, 1820 in East Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Jacob's father was Samuel Gier, born 28 Aug 1795 in Pennsylvania or Maryland, died 2 Feb 1872 in Delaware, Defiance County, Ohio. His mother, Sarah Markel, was born 2 Mar 1796 in Pennsylvania and died 8 Nov 1874 in Defiance County. Mary and Jacob's children: David b: 1842/1843 in Wayne County and married Caroline Ingle in Defiance County 30 Oct 1864. Lucinda b: 1844/1845 in Wayne County and was buried after 1851 in Defiance County. Charlotte b: 1846/1847 in Wayne County Mary b: 9 Sep 1849 in Wayne County and died 16 Jul 1860 in Defiance County at 10 years of age. Samuel b: 1851 in Ohio Levi b: 1854 in Defiance County Sarah b: 20 Jun 1859 in Defiance County and died 13 Sep 1862 in Defiance County at 3 years of age. Sarah Howman, born June 26, 1821 in Ohio; died August 14, 1897 in Alaiedon Twp, Ingham County, Michigan. She married Joseph Keeler March 8, 1837 in Congress Twp, Wayne County, Ohio; born June 5, 1816 in Pennsylvania (perhaps Philadelphia); died December 7, 1886 in Ingham County, Michigan. Sarah may have remarried after Joseph's death. Sarah died of a tumor; Joseph of cancer on his lips. Both are buried in Leek Cemetery, Alaiedon Twp. Children of Joseph Keeler and Sarah Howman are: John Hamilton, born December 22, 1840 in Ohio; died March 17, 1917 in Ingham County. He married (1) Sarah Hickerson Bef. 1861; born December 4, 1840 in MI; died July 12, 1877 in Alaiedon Twp. He married (2) Rebecca M. Fisher October 13, 1861 in Meridian Twp, Ingham County; born April 1843; died November 16, 1869 in Ingham County. He married (3) Margaret Templer abt. 1886; born October 1847 in New York; died 1915. Rebecca Fisher's father was Samuel Fisher. Her mother was Ulyssa Morse, a sister of Samuel Morse, inventor of Morse code. The Fishers lived in Titisville, PA where the first oil well was discovered Aug. 27, 1859 in USA. They owned some of the stock. Elizabeth C., born about 1842. She married Jacob H. Hase (Hare?) February 11, 1863 in Lansing, Ingham County. Mary Ann, born March 25, 1844 in Ohio; died October 12, 1896 in Meridian Twp. She married Charles Wesley Barnes January 23, 1863 in Okemos, Ingham County; born November 17, 1840 in LeRoy, Genesse County, New York; died December 16, 1909 in Meridian Twp. Joseph, born November 1847 in Michigan; died after 1870. He married (1) Sarah E. Cook December 27, 1871 in Okemos; born 1852 in New York. He married (2) S. Elizabeth between 1871 - 1872; born 1853 in New York; died before 1931. Sarah Ann, born between January - July 1850 in Alaiedon Twp. She married John J. Kennedy September 27, 1867 in Ingham County; born December 20, 1844 in Alaiedon Twp; died April 8, 1885 in Alaiedon Twp. Lovinia, born April 4, 1853; died May 20, 1862 in Ingham County. Andrew J., born July 1855 in Michigan; died 1920 in Ingham County. He married Olive E. Laycock about 1877; born August 1854 in Michigan; died 1938 in Ingham County. Lydia Howman, born about 1822 in Pennsylvania or Maryland. She married Jacob W. Hare November 6, 1832 in Wayne Co, Ohio; born 1807 in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer & Justice of the Peace. In the 1850 and 1870 censuses her given name is Lydia; in 1880 it is Elizabeth. Their children were: Esther b: 1833 in Ohio Barbara b: Aug 1834 in Ohio Jacob b: 1836/1837 in Ohio Josiah A. b: 1853/1854 in Indiana Samuel Howman, born March 24, 1826 in Chester Twp; died June 23, 1851 in Chester Twp. He is buried in the Old Dutch Reformed Cemetery. Hannah Howman, born April 13, 1831 in Chester Twp; died September 30, 1871. She married Andrew Rebman November 28, 1850; born January 1828 in Pennsylvania; died December 3, 1868. Andrew's father, Joseph Rebman, b: 1792/1793 in Wurttemburg, Germany, came to America on the ship Codelia, under Captain Calvin Delano, sailing from Amsterdam. His mother Mary was born Nov 1796 in Pennsylvania. Hannah and Andrew's children: Fredrick Albert b: 14 JUN 1866 in Burket, Kosciusko County, Indiana Harry E. b: 4 APR 1863 near Claypool, Koskeosko County, Indiana David L b: 1854 William L b: 17 APR 1857 in Kosciusko County, Indiana
