     James McPherson, or Squa-la-ka-ke, "the red-faced man," was a native of 
Carlisle, Cumberland county, Pa.  He was taken prisoner by the Indians on the 
Ohio, at or near the mouth of the Big Miami, in Loughry's defeat; was for many 
years engaged in the British Indian Department, under Elliott and McKee, married 
a fellow-prisoner, came into our service after Wayne's treaty of 1795, and 
continued in charge of the Shawanese and Senecas of Lewistown until his removal 
from office, in 1830, since which he has died.
