MELVIN – His son, James M., enlisted in 1863 in the ???th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served to the close of the war. Mrs. Melvin had one brother and three half-brothers in the war. James M. Gore enlisted in 1863 in the 5th Virginia and was killed at the battle of Winchester, September 19, 1864. Her half-brothers, Levi, Henry, and Isham Kelley, all served in the 5th Virginia, enlisting in 1861. Henry served until 1863, when he was discharged for disability. Levi and Isham served during the entire war. Mr. Melvin is the father of thirteen children, as follows: Baby, born February 5, 1843, died same day; William H., February 13, 1844, died August 20, 1852; Asseneth J. (Rowe), November 22, 1846, resides in this county; James M., May 24, 1847, resides in this county; Jonathan A., January 5, 1849, resides in Boyd county, Kentucky; Mary A. (Williams), November 17, 1850, resides in this county; Tabitha E. (Humphreys), December 13, 1852, resides in this county; John Co., August 29, 1854, resides in this county; Charles S., November 9, 1856, resides in this county; Cornelius H., December 4, 1858, resides in this county; Caroline D., February 16, 1861, died October 18, 1874; Sarah E., December 31, 1862, resides at home; William S., March 31, 1865, resides at home.
