"Mr. Collin Thevenin died at the residence of Robert Harrison near Yellow Town, aged 101 years. He was the son of Nicholas Thevenin, one of the French setters of ancient Gallipolis. Mr. Thevenin was perhaps the oldest resident of Gallia County. His funeral services took place Monday." GALLIPOLIS TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER, dtd. Feb. 1893 Roll #25847. from Columbus Ohio Historical Society. "Collin Thevenin living near Yellow Town terminated this life, Sunday Jan. 22nd. 1893, at the great age of 101 years. He died at the residence of Robt. Harrison, where he had made his home for several years. He had a home of his own up to a short time before his death near the place where he died, which he sold. He left children as follows: Collin, James, Robert, Absalom, Taylor, Mrs Thomas Dale and Mrs. A. Shults living on Kanawha. Mrs. Thevenin died several years ago in the neighborhood of 75 years of age. Rev. Jesse Ingles, from whom we gather these facts says he attended the wedding of Mr. & Mrs. Thevenin when he was 16 years of age. At that time Mr. Thevenin was 36 years old and Mr. Ingels is now 81 year. He lived in sight of Mr. Thevenin's home for forty or more years. He describes Mr. Thevenin as a man who never made much display in the world, impulsive, but soon over it. He was of small stature, not weighing over 135 pounds. He was industrious and of good habits. He never accumulated a great deal but made a good living. His education was limited, but he stood well among his neighbors. He had a son who died in the war-John- and for whose loss he drew a pension of $12.00 per month. As for himself he was very hearty and rugged. He came here from the French Grant, and was a miller and farmer. He was a great fisherman and for twenty years fished half of his time. Once when he was fishing a man accidentally shot him through the arm, but he kept on fishing. This happened on Mr. Ingels' place. He was very successful as a fisherman. He used tobacco all of his life. He attended every election but for the past six years went about very little. He was first a whig and then a Republican and rampant in politics. He was liked to hunt to some extent, but fishing was his strong hold for pastime. Mr. Ingels has the gun that Mr. Thevenin had made when he was a boy. He was very courageous and was afraid of nothing, and would fight at the drop of a hat. He was laid to rest in the Harrison graveyard close to where he had lived, his greatest honor in this life being his long allotted years, which though uneventful seemed to have been pleasantly spent." APPLICATION FOR LETTERS OF GUARDIANSHIP, STATE OF OHIO, GALLIA COUNTY. In probate court February 4, 1889. Robert Harrison appointed guardian for Collin Thevenin, Imbecile about age 95 years. The property and estate of said Imbecile as nearly as can be ascertained, is as follows: Personal property consisting of $125.00 of pension to him coming and twelve dollars per month hereafter. No Real Estate. A bond of $500.00. Address Thivener, Ohio. (Note: This Robert Harrison is probably the great grandson of Collin. His daughter, Phoebe Thevenin, wife of Grandville Leach, had a daughter, Louisa Leach who married Simeon Harrison. Note: It must be understood that in this time period the word "Imbecile" was to describe the mental age of Collin...today it is referred to as "Senility" or "Alzheimer's."] Submitted by; Donna M.
