Darke County OHIO Biographies.....George Jacob Shultz October 14 1797 - March 31 1866 ******************************************************* File contributed for Ohio Biographies Project by: Francis Motschman, Sr. dalesr99@earthlink.net July 13, 2003, 5:10 pm Author: Francis D. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of George Jacob Shultz Son of George or Jacob Shultz by Francis D. Motschman, Sr George Jacob Shultz was the son of either George or Jacob Shultz and was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania on Wed., October 14, 1797. The lush green hills of Dauphin County pleased him but couldn't hold him in their grasp as was with John Shultz. George was raised on the farm and learned how to be a good farmer. When he was about fifteen he served in the military in the War of 1812. He must have lied about his age to have done this.. He left the service and came back home where he met and successfully courted Elizabeth Creager or as seen in some places, Elizabeth Gregor. Since all of the Darke County Shultz's referred to her as Creager we will also. Elizabeth was a strong girl and quite pretty. She was a year younger than George having been born on Sat., April 3, 1798. They were very much in love with each other and she became pregnant shortly after their marriage. Their first born was a son and he was given the name of Henry. We have no dates for his birth or death, as we do for the rest of the children, so it is probable that he died shortly after birth. Being young, it was no time untill she was pregnant again, and that's the way the years flew by. Working the farm, pregnant, working the farm, etc., etc. Susanna (Midlam) was the second, born on a nice spring day, Thur., May 8, 1819. Then there was Rebecca (Hunter), (Hartle), Sun., Sept. 22, 1822 in York County, PA. Then again, there was a boy whom they named Jacob. He was born on Sun., May 6, 1827. Next came Elizabeth (Brown) in 1830 and another girl, Leah (Riffle), on Fri., March 23, 1832. They had two more, Mary (Hunter) on Tue., July 1, 1834 and George Washington born on Tue., July 25, 1837. Three of the children married into the Hunter family. Rebecca married Robert Hunter, Mary married Robert's Nephew, William Fulton Hunter, Jr. and then George Washington married William's sister, Sarah Hunter. In 1838 Susanna accepted the proposal of her ardent suitor, William Midlam to marriage and their first born, Samuel was born on Sun., April 21, 1839. George was still young enough to have ambitions which were shared by Elizabeth. She had been receiving letters from her sister in Ohio telling her how wonderful their farm was doing. After a while they couldn't stand it any longer, they sold their farm and emigrated to Ohio. It is known that they stayed for a time at the home of Elizabeth's sister and her family near Blue Ball in Warren County. While they stayed there George went scouting for a prospective area for their new farm. It took about six years but he found some fine acreage to purchase in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. Elizabeth's sister and her family must have been truly wonderful people and blessed with great patience to have put up with an entire family for about six years. It isn't known whether Susanne and William Midlam stayed on the farm in Warren County or not. If they did they had three children born to them there, before going to Darke County. It is probable that the Midlam's went to Darke County first and that could have been instrumental in George's decision to go to Darke County. After leaving Warren County for the super rich soil of Darke County George and Elizabeth lived out the remainder of their lives near Ansonia in Darke County, Ohio. He died on Sat., March 31, 1866 and she moved in with Susanna and William after George's death. She went to meet with George on Sun., September 14, 1873 after fighting a losing battle with Pneumonia. They are both resting in the Ansonia Cemetery, just East of Ansonia. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/bios/ohbios/ File size: 4.1 Kb
