Darke County OHIO Biographies.....Dietrich Shultz ******************************************************* File contributed for Ohio Biographies Project by: Francis Motschman, Sr. dalesr99@earthlink.net July 13, 2003, 4:56 pm Author: Francis D. Motschman, Sr. There is a Mystery in the Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of DIETRICH SHULTZ by Francis D. Motschman, Sr Family tradition has it that Dietrich boldly took off for America, as a young man, from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was unaware, when he somehow settled in the beautiful hills of Pennsylvania in the area of Lancaster County, that he was embarking on the role of being the progenitor of the Shultz family of Darke County, Ohio. We know that this is where he originally settled because he appears on a list of "Ye Ancient Inhabitants of Londonderry Township", of Lancaster County in the year 1778. This was a list of all of the men eligible for Military Service. This included men between the age of 18 and 35 years. It is unknown whether Dietrich was actually ever in the Service or not. As he attains a family it is known that he emigrated to Dauphin County, PA where his son John was born, Sat., January 8, 1788. It is unclear whether the other five children born before him: Jacob (Abt. 1777), George (Abt. 1778), Anna Margaretha (Abt. 1780), Catharina (Abt. 1784) and Susanna (Abt. 1786), were born in Lancaster or Dauphin County. It was originally accepted that the Darke County, Ohio Shultz's oldest ancestor was George Jacob Shultz born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on Wed., the 14th of October, 1797. It certainly makes sense that he had a father and mother there in Dauphin County and that they spelled their name S H U L T Z. To the best of our knowledge there was no other family of Shultz's there other than Dietrich's forming family. This is where the MYSTERY comes into the family. It seems very likely that George Jacob was the son of either Jacob or George Shultz. The timing is right, the naming is meaningful and there are no other candidates in the line of sight. So a new entity is created... Mystery Shultz... he is the father of George Jacob and he is either Jacob or George Shultz, son of Dietrich. Maybe in time there will no longer be a Mystery. The only other grandchildren other than George Jacob that we have been able to find out about, are through Dietrich's son, John, who married Mary Ann Eisenhower and with her help produced four children. There was Esther, Anna Elizabeth, John William and Jacob. John Shultz died on Mon., December 19, 1864 in Dauphine County and he lies in Long St. Peter's Church Cemetery South of Halifax, North of Harrisburg, Dauphine County, Pennsylvania but his line of the Shultz Family lives on.
